Carolina Improvements (formerly known as UCHIGA) was founded in 2006 by Charlie Rock Hargett, a home improvement guru of the Piedmont Triad. After years working with Allgood Construction and regional contractors, Charlie set out to build a company that would do things differently – one where every homeowner is treated like family and every project is completed as if it were his own home.
What started as a four-man operation in Winston-Salem has grown into a team of 30+ skilled professionals serving homeowners from the Appalachian foothills to the Outer Banks. We’ve completed over 2,000 projects spanning roofing, siding, decks, windows, enclosures, garages, driveways, and much more.
Today, more than half of our new business comes from referrals and repeat customers – the clearest sign we can think of that we’re doing something right.

United Contractors Home Improvement Group of America (UCHIGA) was established in Winston-Salem, NC with a small team and a big commitment to quality home renovations.
With roofing, siding, and window installation as our primary focus, we added decks and ramps to our growing list of services to better serve the whole-home needs of our customers.
Reached 500 completed projects and expanded our service territory to cover the full Piedmont Triad and Raleigh-Durham regions.
We changed our name from UCHIGA to Carolina Improvements and Grew our team to 30+ skilled professional crews and extended service coverage to most of North Carolina, from the mountains to the coast.
With the plans of franchising throughout the United States in most major markets, we changed our name from Carolina Improvements to The Improvement Store.
After spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in marketing on Google with our new name, we concluded having the word "store" in our name was hurting our google presence and chose to go back to our old trusted name Carolina Improvements.
